The Best Thing You Can Be

The best thing you can be in this world is smart and able. I know it might sound limiting, but it’s not about being the fittest or the strongest, it’s about asking: What can you do? Then doing it. And never stopping. Keep making it better. Keep moving forward.

And about being “smart”…I don’t mean having all the answers. I mean pausing, listening, reading, writing, and actually thinking. For a long time, I didn’t understand why people watched reality TV. Then one day, when I was carrying a heavy workload and leading a lot of people, I realized. I understood. I finally understood what it felt like to not want to think, not even for a little while.

But here’s the thing: when you think, you discover. When you discover, you grow. And when you grow, the world responds.

Can you imagine if Ben Franklin ever stopped?

Your contribution to the world matters. It’s just that the world is so massive, we all get lost in it sometimes. But time keeps moving. And in that time, people leave things behind, like ideas, buildings, creations, that shape the lives of those who come after.

Some cultures teach us to think seven generations forward before we make decisions. That’s vision. That’s the kind of thinking that builds observatories on hills and brings rivers back to life in cities. It’s not just about us right now, it’s about what someone will be grateful for, long after we’re gone

I think about this whenever I see Griffith Observatory, sitting high above the city. From almost anywhere in Los Angeles, I can look up and see it. It’s an incredible place, full of people, full of vision. And I’m grateful someone had the foresight to make it real.

Or when I walk by Frogtown on the LA River, I feel that same sense of possibility. I hope that during my lifetime in Los Angeles, I get to see more of it extend, expand, and connect. Because what a marvel it is for a city to have a river like that running through it.

But here’s the truth: none of it happens without vision. None of it happens without someone thinking, moving, and pushing through.

So be smart. Be able. And never stop.
