Escape Plans and Real Life: Lessons from Arnold, Stallone, and the Long Game

There’s a movie called Escape. Actually, there are three of them. But the second one, Escape Plan (2013), with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, is my absolute favorite. First of all, these two? They both know how to move without saying more. That silent trust. That unspoken code. Yeah, that. But what really hits me is their long game. Their obstacles. Their sharp minds and intelligence. The way they pay attention to every detail. The patience it takes to wait for the one shot, or the discipline to know when you have to wait for the next.

All of that feels like my life right now. The economy is shifting, and it’s affecting my work, and my business. It’s affecting my industry. Affecting my present while also affecting my future. I’ve been watching the game. Moving in silence. Building in silence. It’s hard. It takes faith. It takes drive and it takes energy, the physical, emotional, and mental kind.

But you know what? They got out in the movie. They made it because they were good at what they do. And that’s the reminder I hold onto. I’m intelligent. I’m capable. I’m strategic. I’m sharp. I stay sharp.

It also reminds me of why I respect Arnold and Sylvester outside the screen. Arnold knew when it was his shot, he followed it, and it delivered. He carries himself like an honorable man. Sylvester Stallone? He has always known his voice so clearly that he refuses to budge when it comes to his vision. He’ll write it, he’ll star in it, he’ll own it. That’s powerful. To know your character. To know your voice. To trust it so much you won’t move off it. That’s strength.

So keep moving. Keep digging. Keep living. Because sometimes the escape isn’t running, it’s building, waiting, and trusting that when it’s your shot, you’ll be ready.

Journal Prompt

Think about your own “escape plan”, the long game for what you’re working on right now.

  • Where are you moving in silence, waiting for the right opening?

  • What obstacles are sharpening your patience and intelligence?

  • When your shot comes, what will it mean for you to claim it fully?
