Safety is Sexy

Safety isn’t boring. Safety isn’t overprotective. Safety is sexy. I learned this in places as different as the hospital and the bike lane.

Coach Vida on a different hustle

Today, I sat in a hospital masked up as a visitor. One of the people in the group I was working with gave me a hard time for keeping it on, but a nurse backed me up. That moment mattered to me because safety is about inclusion, about protecting everyone.

I think about this too when I ride my bike. A friend once refused to wear a helmet because it was uncool. But for me the ride was too long, too unknown. I’m not a pro, but I know enough to insist, not just because of me, but because of other people who might not pay attention. In fact, a couple of close calls have been because of another person, a driver, or a pedestrian not seeing me. That’s a reminder that my safety isn’t only in my hands; it’s in theirs too. And that’s exactly why I choose protection.

I’m not just about helmets, either. I even ride lit up ,literally. I’ve got lights on my bike so there’s no way you can miss me. Safety is about being seen, and sometimes that means glowing in the dark.

That’s also why neon yellow and neon green became our colors in FormaFit Active. They’re not just bright, they’re unapologetically visible. They scream: SEE ME! At first, I felt awkward being lit up like a highlighter in public. But over time, it turned into my favorite color. A shift from the all-black, Wednesday Addams vibe I carried since high school, to this: a reflection of choosing life, movement, and safety.

Safety is sexy because it says: I value myself. I plan to be here tomorrow. I move through this world with care, and I expect the world to see me. Whether it’s PPE, a helmet, or a neon vest, safety isn’t an afterthought. It’s the style that never goes out.
