Still Coach Vida

Recently, I met someone who, in conversation, told me two things:

  1. I had to “change my mindset.”

  2. I needed to “get hobbies.”

This guy had just met me. Two seconds in, and already he had me summed up and judged.

Here’s the thing: I live my life intentionally. I see. I honor. I hold a code. If you’ve read my blog, you know this already. I don’t skim the surface, I live fully.

And “hobbies”? Coming from this guy, it basically meant, “I work out.” That’s what I’m living. That’s what I’ve been living. I am a mover. I am an athlete where the mainstream world never catered. I’m a 2nd-degree Black Belt. I’m a certified scuba diver. I’m Coach Vida, the one eyes like his never seem to see, because they have no depth.

In my day job, I’m an architect. A builder. I don’t just clock in. I move on mission. My work is purpose-driven, built on the freelance hustle, self-employed grit, and business ownership. I stand on the grind. And when someone doesn’t see the warrior in front of them, I’m not offended, I’m just annoyed.

Because the grind I’m on? I don’t give away time lightly. I don’t wait around for someone to catch up to the plane I’m on or to decide to pick up their own weapon, tool, or vision and stand next to me. To stand next to us: The builders. The ones who move with purpose.

So I ended that meetup. And still, I gave him the grace of making it about me, not him. But here’s the truth, it reminded me why I built FormaFit Active. My journal. My movement. My claim.

I am an athlete. no matter what I look like, no matter how old I get, no matter how my body shifts or stays the same. I live in this body. I move this body. I know this body. Even when the fitness and movement world doesn’t cater to me, I cater to myself.

That’s why I test my gear. I buy my hats. I check my shoes. I change the tubes on my bike. I figure it out. I hardly know how, but I learn as I go.

And still, I’m Coach Vida, bitch. So tell me again that I need to change my mindset or get some hobbies. I think you, sir, need to wake up and catch up cause objects in mirror? They’re already out of reach.

Journal Prompt

I know I’m not the only one who’s been told to “change your mindset” or “get hobbies” like the grind, the purpose, the movement isn’t already alive in you.

  • When was the last time someone misread you or minimized your path?

  • How did you hold your ground or let your actions speak?

  • If you had to write your own unapologetic declaration (“I am…”), what would it say?
