The Proof Is Still There | Visit to the La Brea Tar Pits

You read the signs at the La Brea Tar Pits, the numbers, the time, the brutal truth of it. How many animals died there. How long it went on. The layers of earth and oil and history stacked with quiet violence. It could’ve stopped you in your tracks. And then you look up.

The city is moving around it. Families with strollers. Museum signs. Ice cream. A skyline of buildings that didn’t exist when that first creature got stuck. And suddenly it’s not just a death site. it’s a reminder. Proof.

Proof that life keeps going. That we build anyway. That structure matters. That something stays.

Even when it's brutal. Even when it’s slow. Even when you’re not sure anyone will remember what you laid down the proof will still be there.

Levitated Mass at LACMA

Levitated Mass at LACMA

There’s a rock you can stand under at the museum. A giant piece of the past, suspended above your head. Levitated Mass. 340-ton granite boulder placed over a concrete trench, creating the illusion that it's floating. The artwork was created by Michael Heizer and opened to the public in 2012.

Depending on where you stand, it’s just you and the rock. That’s it. The moment is silent. You could almost believe it’s just about you, your breath, your body, your time.

But when you step back out, the tar pits are still there. The signs are still there. The truth is still there. And that’s both the hardest part and the holiest part. You don’t get to pretend forever. But you do get to build. To shape. To leave something behind that might outlast the fear. Or the doubt. Or even the truth itself. Because the proof is still there. And you’re part of it.

So keep moving.

What truth are you standing next to that you haven’t fully faced?
What would it mean to build anyway not in spite of it, but because it’s real?
Where in your life is the proof already showing up, even if no one sees it yet?
