Long, Active, and Useful: Why Ben Franklin Belongs on FormaFit

What does Ben Franklin have to do with movement and mindset?

Honestly, a lot more than you might think. Franklin was in pursuit of a long and useful life. He dedicated himself to work, innovation, and building a better world yet he longed for moments of repose, for the energy to enjoy life along the way.

Today, I’m redefining that legacy: I don’t just want a long and useful life; I want a life that is long, active, and filled with energy.

Imagine if there was no lightning rod?

Franklin and the Purpose of Work

Ben Franklin worked tirelessly, writing, inventing, shaping society.

But what he wanted most wasn’t mere wealth or notoriety; he desired “repose” a balance between work and the joy of living. His routines, his discipline, and his philosophy remind us that being useful doesn’t mean sacrificing our ability to live well.

My Shift: Active + Useful > is much more than Just “Busy”

Life isn’t about working until we burn out. But being a part of something is important and our contribution matters.

Still, it’s important to me to that my days not be defined solely by work and obligation.

Instead, I’m committed to staying active, moving freely, stretching, and making time for recovery, so that I have the energy to be useful and creative every day.

For me, it’s not about dreaming of retirement; it’s about having the freedom to work, to build, and to live fully while I do so.

"Life is a kind of journey — and the best way to lengthen it is to walk it well."

Movement and Meaningful Work: A Unified Vision

Movement is not just about physical health; it’s the energy that fuels our purpose.

Franklin had his daily habits and virtues, his system of self-checks that allowed him to thrive in a demanding world.

I have my trail walks, my Sunday Stretch sessions, and my commitment to life long curiosity and mindful movement. Different tools, same powerful intention: staying ready for life.

If I want to keep showing up for my ideas, my community, and my mission, then I must nurture a body that supports continuous, free movement.

Reclaiming a Legacy for Our Time

Ben Franklin’s story is a timeless reminder that work is honorable and necessary for progress. Yet, along the way, we deserve to enjoy our lives, to be healthy, to move freely — not just to survive but to thrive.

I’m not aiming for a quiet retirement someday; I’m pursuing a long, active, and useful life right now. In embracing movement, discipline, and mindful balance, we reclaim the energy needed to build a brighter future. That’s why Ben Franklin belongs on FormaFit, he inspires us to work hard, but more importantly, to live fully.

“Work is honorable. Life is short. Move while you can and live fully while you work.”
