Journal Entry: Keep Going Means Keep Moving

Some days, it’s all about the X. I use a paper calendar, and every time I move, whether it’s a long walk, a strength session, or stretching in the parking lot, I mark it. An X on the day. Simple. Satisfying. A visual reminder that I showed up for myself. That I moved. I like to look back at the month and see it full of those Xs, scattered across weeks like proof: I didn’t quit. But I’ll be honest, it’s not always smooth.

I’m self-employed. That means I don’t always control the rhythm. When work hits, especially the kind I do, physically and cognitively demanding jobs, back-to-back assignments/projects, sometimes solo, sometimes managing a team, emotional output, everything shifts. You know what I’m talking about. That’s when my trained body steps in. That’s when I’m reminded why I move, even on the light days. Because when things get heavy, I need to be ready.

Lately, I’ve been pivoting a lot. I’ve had weeks where it’s start-stop energy, projects pulling my focus, and long sessions where my body needs to stay sharp and grounded. And here’s the truth: if I hadn’t kept moving all along, I might not have been able to keep up. To stay on task. To stay present.

So keep going doesn’t mean “hit the gym 5 times a week” for me. Instead:

  • It means stretch in the parking lot.

  • It means quick toe taps in the restroom.

  • It means shoulder rolls before a Zoom.

  • It means arm raises and pocket fuel (a snack) between calls.

Keep going means keep moving. Even when the schedule is wild. Even when the projects pile up. Even when the invoice has been sent, payment is expected days ago, but has not arrived. Even when no one’s watching but me and that little X I get to draw on the calendar.

It might not make sense to everyone. But this is how I train for the life I live. This is how I stay ready. This is how I keep going. This is how I build.

Remember, they say the work we do today determines how we’ll live 10 years from now.
I’m not just still moving, I’m still building.
