Mental Fitness & The Power of Classical Music
Lately I’ve been adding something new to my mental fitness routine: classical music.
Not as background noise.
Not as something “nice.”
As training.
I’ve been listening while I drive, while I work, and especially when I feel my nerves start to climb. And what I’ve noticed is simple but powerful. Classical music sharpens my mind the way walking sharpens my legs. It calms my system, slows my breathing, and forces my ear to focus on detail. It’s like giving my brain a stretch session it didn’t know it needed.
I’m sharing this 7-minute performance by Yunchan Lim because it’s been part of my reset this week. If you want to try this with me:
Listen to it twice.
Once with your ears.
Once with your heart.
Notice if your mood shifts. Notice if your chest loosens. Notice if your thoughts quiet down.
Here’s why this matters for FormaFit Active: fitness is not just physical. Mental fitness is stamina. Mental fitness is discipline. Mental fitness is being able to stay focused, calm, and capable when life bends, twists, or throws weight you didn’t plan to carry.
Classical music has roots in math. Pythagoras believed harmony was all numbers, ratios, structure. And that clicked for me. This past month I’ve been printing algebra worksheets just to keep my mind active, the same way I hit the trails to keep my body strong.
Because listen, aging well is not an accident. It’s training. It’s repetition. It’s choosing to strengthen the parts of yourself other people ignore until it’s too late. I don’t have a village to fall back on. So I’m building a mind and body that can hold me.
This season of my life is about entering older age with power, strong legs, sharp thinking, steady emotions, and a rhythm I can actually enjoy. Classical music is just one tool in the toolbox, but it’s working.
If you try the exercise—two listens, two levels—let me know what you felt. Mental fitness starts with awareness, and sometimes all it takes is seven minutes of music to reset the whole day.
