Some Hikes Challenge Your Legs. Others Challenge Your Mind.

Some hikes challenge your legs. Others challenge your mind. I've learned that the hardest part of a trail usually isn't the incline. It's the conversation you have with yourself while you're climbing. "This is a good place to rest." "But if I stop, I might not keep going."

VIew of the city from Mt. Hollywood

View toward the city.

There are moments when the goal feels impossibly far away. Moments when every step feels heavier than the last. On this hike, I found myself doing something I hadn't planned.

When the trail became too steep, I turned around and walked backward. It wasn't faster. It wasn't easier. It was simply the way I could keep moving. Sometimes progress doesn't look the way we imagined it would. Sometimes it means slowing down, changing our approach, or taking one awkward step at a time instead of charging ahead.

Eventually, I looked up. "There it is. It's closer." Not because the mountain had changed, but because I had kept going. When I finally reached the top, I stood still, caught my breath, and looked out over the city. For a moment, none of my problems could follow me there. They still existed. They would still be waiting when I returned. But for those few quiet moments, they couldn't reach me.

I needed that reminder. The goal wasn't to outrun my problems. The goal was to remember that I'm still capable of reaching places that once felt impossible.

Maybe that's what some hikes are really for. Not to prove how strong your legs are.But to remind you how strong your mind can be.

After the climb comes the reward. Watch from one of the overlooks here.

Journal Prompt

Think of a challenge you're facing right now.

Are you trying to push straight through it when a different approach might help you keep moving?

What would "walking backward" look like in your own life—not as giving up, but as finding another way forward?
