Move Anyway: Trail Thoughts on a Slow Day
Today marks the third straight day in a row this week of being on the move. I’m not going far, just walking the trail, three to four miles at a time, slowly increasing. For example from a simple 5 mile average a week, to 7, to 9, and so on. It’s also been pretty hot. My body is still rusty. And I’m testing out some new gear. Can you call it a kit if you’re not hiking Everest? I’m calling it that anyway.

My favorite thing right now, my boom box JBL
This morning, my inbox was quiet. The mailbox was empty. The online payments I’ve been waiting to for? Still pending. I felt that old familiar pit starting to form in my stomach, the kind that wants to drag you down and keep you stuck. But I knew what I had to do. I had to get up and move.
I was sore, the good kind of sore, the kind that reminds you that you’ve been showing up. Still, I realized I hadn’t been doing my usual prep routines. I’ve been so focused on getting back out there that I forgot to support the process.
So today, I made a few small changes.
Switched my trail shoes.
Had a little protein before heading out.
On the trail, I took a GU packet and snacked on some cherries. I picked up all my trash, of course. Left some nuts behind for the squirrels. Because we all need a little support.
Some days, the most powerful thing you can do is choose not to stay stuck.
Movement doesn’t have to be epic to be meaningful. You don’t need a perfect plan, just the decision not to stay in the same spot tomorrow. If nothing else, move anyway

Gear matters but only when it works for you. These are the small things that help me stay moving:
