Let’s Talk Socks: The Unsung Gear That Can Make or Break Your Miles

I’ve run/walked a 10K. I’ve done a marathon major. I’ve clocked trail miles on city edges and through the dust of foothills. You know what all of those have in common? The wrong sock will ruin your day.

I love a breathable sock, because then I can go for more support in my shoes. But both, then feels too heavy

Blisters. Overheating. Slippage. Socks might seem like a small detail, but once you start moving seriously, whether it’s training, trail walking, or long-event days, you realize how much that layer matters.

Here’s how I break it down:

Plan for the movement and some other variables

Thick Socks = Long Events

If I’m doing a race, a long walk, or anything over 9+ miles in heat or mixed pavement, I’m wearing cushioned, thick active socks. Not wooly, just thick enough to create support and reduce friction. These are great when I know I’ll be on my feet for hours and I want to feel a barrier between my skin and my shoes.

Thin Socks = Trail Walks + Shorter Sessions

For lighter trail walks or daily movement, I go with thinner active socks. They breathe better, and when the miles are lower (or the terrain is softer), I don’t need as much cushion. These let my foot stay mobile and connected without feeling restricted. And also, I feel lighter.

Foot Prep = Non-Negotiable

Before any training, even short walks, I lather my feet with a light coat of balm or lotion. Not too much, just enough to reduce friction and keep my skin from drying out. It’s the quiet prep that keeps me going longer without blisters or hot spots and honestly, without needing to stop.

Some people overlook socks until there’s a problem. I build comfort from the ground up. This is part of how I Stay Ready.
