Head Down, Heart Open: A Walk Through Silver Lake Reservoir

This city is full of noise, but some places still let you breathe.

Today’s movement took me through the Silver Lake Reservoir complex; a loop that includes the main reservoir trail, a grassy open space called Silver Lake Meadow, and one of the happiest dog parks I’ve ever seen. It’s a tucked-away gem, but the views are wide open.

Walking with Intention

This wasn’t a high-intensity day. It was a presence day. A visor-on, head-down, slow steps kind of walk. The kind where you bring your water pack, take your time, and let the city soften around you.

There’s something special about being surrounded by water in the middle of LA and the signage on LA’s water history reminded me that nothing we enjoy now was ever guaranteed. This city was built, pipe by pipe, plan by plan. Movement too… is built, step by step.

The prayer box I found, with note cards, pens, and a locked box to keep your words private

The Prayer Box

About halfway through, I saw a small wooden prayer box with notecards for prayers and on the back of it, gratitude. I wrote both. On the said that read: “I am thankful for…”
I wrote one word: Movement. And dropped it in.

For me, movement is freedom and joy. I am blessed to experience it and I am grateful to keep moving.

I took a photo because sometimes gratitude needs to be witnessed, even if it’s just by you and for you.

If You Go:

  • Trail: Flat and accessible; perfect for a mindful walk or slow jog but there is hilly part so, there’s a challenge too.

  • Park: Entry to the meadow and dog park is open and free

  • Bring: Water, a visor, and your attention

  • Tip: Go early for shade or later for sunset glow

What Helped Me Move That Day

I brought my water pack. The one I use as a backpack instead of a waistband, because truthfully… the hip strap setup never sits right on me. Using it this way makes movement easier, and it still keeps me hydrated out on these longer walks.

I put stickers on mine and don’t always use the water bladder, instead I use a light weight water bottle. And sometimes, add some trail mix for the squirrels
