The Art of the Curtain: Ritual and Presence at El Capitan Theatre

I went to El Capitan for the movie, but it was the curtain that moved me. Before the trailers rolled, before the lights dimmed completely, a curtain performance unfolded, unexpected, elegant, and completely alive. It shimmered in motion and color like something out of another era. And then came the part that truly caught me off guard: they encouraged us to film it.

Seriously, we were actually encouraged to document this part of the show. (actual video linked below)

I’ve been to a lot of theaters, but rarely have I been invited to witness a ritual, because that’s what this was. Not just a curtain going up, but a ceremonial gesture rooted in the tradition of live stagecraft, from a time when theaters honored the moment the show began.

A Legacy of Movement

At historic theaters like El Capitan, the curtain doesn’t simply rise, it dances. It announces. It prepares. It creates a sense of reverence and anticipation that digital projectors and flat screens can’t replicate. And in this case, it wasn’t just the curtain itself, but the way it was done: lighting design, texture, color, timing. You could feel the intention behind it. Someone made this matter.

This isn’t just nostalgia, it’s presence. And that presence is part of the reason I filmed it, and part of the reason I’m sharing it with you now.

Why It Belongs on FormaFit

FormaFit is about movement. Not just fitness, but rhythm, awareness, ritual, and reclaiming presence in everyday life. And this moment inside El Capitan Theatre? It was all of that. Motion, legacy, design, and care.

You don’t always need to move your body to feel moved.

Watch the Curtain Rise

This stunning curtain performance takes place before every feature at El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA, a rare gem of showmanship and cinematic ritual.

I filmed this handheld, no edits, just presence.

The curtain rises not just to start a movie, but to honor a legacy of theatrical magic.

Captured by FormaFit Active, where movement, ritual, and presence come together.

One More Thing…

There was also a pre-show light performance before the film itself, more on that coming soon. Because in L.A., even the previews have choreography.

Movement is sacred. So are the pauses that come before.
