Today’s movement came with a view of both the city and the past.

Coach Vida

Representing with my Hollywood, CA cap, I took a short hike through one of LA’s most unique trails, the Old LA Zoo Trail at Griffith Park. This loop isn’t too strenuous, but what it lacks in elevation it makes up for in atmosphere.

The path winds through the remains of the original Los Angeles Zoo, which operated from the 1910s until 1965. The old cages, feeding pens, and concrete enclosures are still standing, now covered in layers of graffiti, stickers, and years of Angeleno energy.

There’s something eerie about walking through abandoned habitats. The air feels heavy in places like memory lives here. But still, the trail is full of life. Families, solo hikers, tourists, and dogs move through it, some stopping to pose inside what was once a bear den. Others, like me, just walk, quietly taking it in.

A City in the Distance, a Story Beneath Your Feet

The hike gives you occasional views of Los Angeles . And it feels poetic, somehow.
This trail is tucked inside Griffith Park, but it opens up to glimpses of the city we know now, while your feet move through the bones of what used to be.

Only in LA can you hike through an abandoned zoo, admire the graffiti, feel a little creeped out, and still feel somehow… at home.

📍 If You Go:

  • Park near the Merry-Go-Round lot in Griffith Park

  • The trail is short (~2.5 miles) and has some slight incline, but it's beginner-friendly

  • The site itself is worth pausing to take in: graffiti, signage, and quiet corners included

  • Bring water, wear good shoes, and move with presence

  • Of course, I love my JBL speaker too

This isn’t just a hike. It’s a walk through LA history; wild, weird, and full of layers.
