Am I Fulfilled?

Lately I have found myself wrestling with an uncomfortable question: Am I fulfilled? What a first-world problem to have.

I have been fortunate enough to experience seasons of abundance, but I have also lived through loss, uncertainty, setbacks, and grief. In other words, I have lived a normal life. Yet it is often in moments of stillness that the question appears. Am I fulfilled?

I know from experience that being good at something matters. Meaningful work matters. Passion matters. Purpose matters. Contributing to something larger than ourselves matters. Whether it is helping people, supporting a cause, caring for animals, creating art, teaching, building, or serving a community, contribution gives us confidence, hope, and direction.

So in these quiet moments I find myself asking: What more can I do? Not because what I have done is not enough, but because I know I am not built for a life of doing nothing.

Don't misunderstand me. I enjoy a lazy day as much as anyone else. Give me a comfortable chair, a good show, and some takeout, and I am perfectly happy for a while. But I do not thrive there.

I also know I cannot do everything. I do not have the strength, the tools, or the knowledge to solve every problem I see. None of us do. Maybe that is why I find myself moved by small acts of kindness. A person helping a stranger. Someone rescuing an animal. A volunteer giving their time. A teacher encouraging a student. When I see those moments, I feel grateful. Not because they solve every problem in the world, but because they remind me that goodness is still present.

So if you are one of those people quietly doing good work, thank you. We need you. We need your kindness. We need your effort. We need your contribution. The good deeds matter. They add up.

…And maybe fulfillment is not found in doing everything.

Maybe it is found in continuing to do our small part, as well as we can, wherever we happen to be.
